Bandwidth Extension of Telephone Speech Aided by Data Embedding
نویسندگان
چکیده
A system for bandwidth extension of telephone speech, aided by data embedding, is presented. The proposed system uses the transmitted analog narrowband speech signal as a carrier of the side information needed to carry out the bandwidth extension. The upper band of the wideband speech is reconstructed at the receiving end from two components: a synthetic wideband excitation signal, generated from the narrowband telephone speech and a wideband spectral envelope, parametrically represented and transmitted as embedded data in the telephone speech. We propose a novel data embedding scheme, in which the scalar Costa scheme is combined with an auditory masking model allowing high rate transparent embedding, while maintaining a low bit error rate. The signal is transformed to the frequency domain via the discrete Hartley transform (DHT) and is partitioned into subbands. Data is embedded in an adaptively chosen subset of subbands by modifying the DHT coefficients. In our simulations, high quality wideband speech was obtained from speech transmitted over a telephone line (characterized by spectral magnitude distortion, dispersion, and noise), in which side information data is transparently embedded at the rate of 600 information bits/second and with a bit error rate of approximately 3 · 10−4. In a listening test, the reconstructed wideband speech was preferred (at different degrees) over conventional telephone speech in 92.5% of the test utterances.

Low-Frequency Bandwidth Extension of Telephone Speech Using Sinusoidal Synthesis and Gaussian Mixture Model
The limited audio bandwidth of narrowband telephone speech degrades the speech quality. This paper proposes a method that extends the bandwidth of telephone speech to the frequency range 0–300 Hz. The lowest harmonics of voiced speech are generated using sinusoidal synthesis. The energy in the extension band is estimated from spectral features using a Gaussian mixture model. The amplitudes and ...
متن کاملEffect of bandwidth extension to telephone speech recognition in cochlear implant users.
The present study investigated a bandwidth extension method to enhance telephone speech understanding for cochlear implant (CI) users. The acoustic information above telephone speech transmission range (i.e., 3400 Hz) was estimated based on trained models describing the relation between narrow-band and wide-band speech. The effect of the bandwidth extension method was evaluated with IEEE senten...
متن کاملBandwidth Extension of Speech Signals: A Comprehensive Review
Telephone systems commonly transmit narrowband (NB) speech with an audio bandwidth limited to the traditional telephone band of 300-3400 Hz. To improve the quality and intelligibility of speech degraded by narrow bandwidth, researchers have tried to standardize the telephonic networks by introducing wideband (50-7000 Hz) speech codecs. Wideband (WB) speech transmission requires the transmission...
متن کاملImproved Artificial Low-pass Extension of Telephone Speech
In this contribution a new method for artificial bandwidth extension of telephone speech towards frequencies below 300 Hz is proposed. The method defines a self-contained module which can be applied to any artificial bandwidth extension system, designed for extending the bandwidth only to frequencies above the telephone-band. At this, the amplification of a separate ARMA filter with a pass-band...

We present a new bandwidth extension algorithm for converting narrowband telephone speech into wideband speech using a transformation in the mel cepstral domain. Unlike previous approaches, the proposed method is designed specifically for bandwidth extension of narrowband speech that has been corrupted by environmental noise. We show that by exploiting previous research in mel cepstrum feature ...
